Moonrise Kingdom, directed by Wes Anderson, is a 2012 film that takes place in 1965. Twelve-year-olds Sam and Suzy have fallen in love and decide to run away together. A violent storm is approaching the island forcing adults responsible for the children to mobilize a search party and find the kids. Sam is attending Camp Ivanhoe, a Khaki Scout summer camp while Suzy is living on the island with her parents. They met in the previous summer and have been pen pals since. They decide to run away together so Sam brings camping equipment, and Suzy brings her binoculars, six books, her kitten, and her brother's battery-powered record player.
Throughout the movie, we are able to tell the time period we’re in but much of it is seen in the accessories used by Sam and Suzy as well as pieces of furniture in Suzy’s home, called Summer’s End.
In the beginning of the film, there’s a sequence where each room in Summer’s End is being shown. In the kitchen there’s a 40s style white gas stove oven, almost identical to this one. When we get to the playroom/library for the children, there are rows of books, records, a windowsill for Suzy to sit on and read her books, and an empty Adirondack Snow Shoe Lodge Chair, very similar to this one, next to the kids.
When Sam and Suzy begin their journey to run away together, we’re introduced to Suzy’s quirky baggage that she brings along with her including a yellow suitcase, barrington portable record player, a wicker bag to keep her kitten in, and a vintage red lantern lamp.
